Efficient control of submersible pumps

Submersible pumps are used in, for example, transfer pump stations, irrigation systems and drainage on construction sites, in quarries and mines. Common challenges are damaging dry-running, costly service of valves and difficulties meeting great variations in demand.

Protection for pumps in mines and quarries
When tough conditions, for example in mines, do not allow the use of water level sensors, the Emotron DCM control unit offers a highly reliable and cost-efficient solution. It prevents dry-running and other problems using the pump motor as its own sensor.

The Emotron DCM also adjusts pump operation in accordance to water flow. The pump is stopped immediately when it starts to draw air because of a lack of water, and is restarted when there is water again. Starting and stopping levels are set in seconds with an auto-set function.

Smooth pump operation without water hammer
The torque control of the Emotron MSF softstarter ensures smooth stops, without the risk of water hammer. Greatly reduced start currents allow you to use smaller fuses and power generators. No external control panels or motor-controlled valves are required.

A built-in shaft power monitor immediately detects over- or underload situations, allowing for preventive action to minimize maintenance and downtime. Four parameter settings enable you to use one softstarter for different process demands, for example to meet seasonal variations.

Optimized pump control in polder drainage
Drainage to ensure that reclaimed land lying below sea level remains dry is often carried out by automated systems with a large number of pumps ranging from a few to many hundred kilowatts. Many installations use DOL/star-delta starters and the pumps either run at full power or at no power at all. This causes rapid water movement that causes damage.

The Emotron FDU variable speed drive automatically regulates the whole process as well as each pump individually. Apart from great energy savings, this brings total control of the flow, thus protecting pipeline systems, edges of ditches etc. The robust IP54 enclosure allows mounting next to the controlled pump. This facilitates handling and reduces installation costs.
